How my overlay looks during upload
Why doesn't my whole overlay show up in the previewer?
When you upload an overlay, the previewer is intended to show you how its size compares to a typical background in our Catalog.
- If the dimensions of your overlay are larger than that of a typical size of a 3-zone background, you can use this opportunity to resize it to the size you want!
- If you intentionally wanted it be larger than the background, don’t worry! We won’t crop the image when we save it, so you’ll be able to retain the size.
Why did the top and bottom of my overlay get cut off?
This happens on iPads, as well as any other device with an aspect ratio that is less than 16:9. This happens to the Episode overlays too! Our artists try to make sure that the overlay looks okay even with that small amount not shown.
Directing / using my overlay in my story
How do I use an uploaded overlay?
The same way you use an Episode one -- nothing is different! Just enter the name of your overlay into a script.
- Check out the overlay guides for more details!
How do I use my overlay with a background as a screen without any text on it?
You can use the "@pause for a beat" command:
EXT. SOME BACKGROUND - DAY
JOHN
Check out this cool tree!
EXT. MY TREE - DAY with OVERLAY # your overlay!
@pause for a beat
@pause for a beat # shows background & overlay for two seconds

EXT. SOME OTHER BACKGROUND - DAY
JOHN
Wasn't that neat?
Why do I get a warning when I try to save?
This is just to indicate that your overlay hasn't been approved yet for use in a Published story. You are still free to use it in stories you are creating and sharing with your friends, and you can still preview your story on your device.
Content and approval
Why was my overlay not approved?
Overlays must be in line with our content guidelines.
Why does my overlay show up as a red fog in the app?
This means your overlay was reviewed and not approved. You will need to remove your overlay from that story and use a different one.
