Give readers opportunities to collect items or stats.
Why it works: Point systems and collectibles give readers a clear goal to pursue (and potentially “win”).
How to do it: Identify opportunities to “gamify” your story with collectible objects, points, characters, achievements, or stats.
Tips:
- Always prioritize story over gamification! Many stories don't naturally support points systems and collectibles, so don’t feel like you should shoehorn them in if it doesn’t fit.
- Introduce the point system/collection game as early as possible (preferably in episode 1), and end the point system/collection game as late as possible (ideally in the final episode).
- Give readers a clear goal (e.g. become the #1 E-Girl by gaining 10k followers in the next 30 days, win your Love Interest’s hand in marriage by earning 5+ love points).
- Make it clear that readers will be rewarded for achieving their goal, and make it clear what the reward will be.
Readers can earn followers by paying for Gem Choices (and certain Free Choices). Surpassing another influencer in the ranking unlocks exclusive scenes!
In The K*ss List, readers can “collect” worshippers by paying for certain Gem Choices (and Free Choices). Characters will behave differently based on whether they’ve been converted to worshippers or not.
